Please stop in and help Frost River Trading Co. celebrate a “Grand Opening”

Friday September 14th at 11:00 am & all day Saturday September 15 we are celebrating the craft of making stuff in Duluth.

1910 West Superior Street – the old Minnesota Surplus Building

At Frost River we pride ourselves in using the best raw materials we can get our hands on to build the most reliable softgoods right in our West End store—made in America.

Frost River has been handcrafting packs and bags for more than ten years; we have been on Superior Street with a sign that says Frost River Trading Co. just over one year. We have not yet had a “Grand Opening”.

What have we been up to in the last year?

-Production of waxed canvas packs and bags is running at a feverish pace in the same space as our retail store.

-We routinely ship our “Reliable Softgoods” across the country and around the world; both to individual customers who place orders at frostriver.com as well as to a growing wholesale network of stores that carry Frost River packs and bags.

-The full Frost River line (160+ items) is now normally in stock in our retail store the retail floor is essentially a really nice “walk-in” warehouse for frostriver.com

-An experienced retail manager has just been added to help a group of manufacturers develop and run a retail store that is drawing increasing interest.

-Partnerships with other American craftspeople, several here in the Northland, are helping to build unique character in the merchandise in the Frost River Trading Co.

-The store is becoming a hub to showcase some of the highest quality American made outdoor items as we find them.

-Customers get a unique view into a functioning manufacturing facility. Old world materials and craftsmanship combine for reliability that is unsurpassed by modern synthetics and outsourced construction.

-Stop in to see us. We usually have coffee on in the shop and on Saturday the 15th we’ll have food catered by Duluth Grill. Come on over!

Help has arrived to Frost River!

The Frost River crew has learned that running a retail store is a lot of work. Proprietor Chris Benson has invested the help of Dawn Moen to help the Frost River Trading Co. move from manufacturers into the realm of being successful retailers.

Dawn brings a career of retail work with her. She has worked at, managed, staffed, trained employees… and liquidated both product and personnel at several mall area stores. In more than two decades of work she has worked at Eddie Bauer, Talbott’s, T.J. Maxx, The Gap, and she both opened and closed the Disney Store in the mall. Her new endeavor will involve no liquidating and she feels it will be a refreshing change of pace to work for a truly American brand that is based in Duluth and experiencing tremendous growth.

The Frost River Trading Company came into the former Minnesota Surplus building on West Superior Street just over a year ago. Prior to the move, they were crafting their waxed canvas canoe packs, luggage, briefcases, and bags in a rented space 12 blocks to the southwest. The former location was difficult to find, had little ambiance to welcome customers in, and had almost no foot traffic. Frost River had been relying almost solely on its website, frostriver.com to reach its retail customers and was doing surprisingly well shipping packs and bags all around the world.

Building a traditional “brick and mortar” retail presence has become increasingly important. Dawn has been brought on as store manager to help to develop a retail experience for the Frost River Trading Co. store and help the Frost River brand move forward. In a time where a global marketplace is realizing the value in high quality, handcrafted, American made goods it has become important for Frost River to offer a shopping and visiting experience that reflects the reliability and old world nature of crafting reliable packs and bags from waxed canvas and leather.

Frost River aims for the stars

A Duluth small business is hoping to play a part in an Oscar contending film this winter. Frost River was chosen to supply several of their hand crafted duffel bags to Warner Bros. studios this summer as the production company was shooting the film Extremely Loud Incredibly Close. Now the crew at Frost River is hoping one of their bags makes the cut and has a role in the movie.

Join Frost River as Proprietor Chris Benson closes the workshop, springs for tickets for his crew, and hosts a “Duluth Premier” party on Friday Jan. 20th at Duluth 10 Theaters in Canal Park.

Studio executives have not indicated if a bit of Duluth gets a bit part in an A-list film which includes a cast of Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, and John Goodman. Frost River workers do know they made hundreds of the hopefully famous duffel bags for the studio to give to the cast and crew as gifts at their premier.

A “key” is a strong symbol in the film. The story follows a boy whose father is killed in New York on September 11, 2001. The youngster finds a key in his father’s belongings and embarks on an adventure to discover more about his father who was lost in the terrorist attacks. An icon of the “key” was embossed on a piece of leather and sewn on all of the Frost River bags. The bags were then given out as a gift by Warner Bros. Pictures to the cast, crew, and VIP attendees of the film’s theatrical premier.

Frost River’s viewing schedule Friday 1/20/12: –Arrive at 12:30 for the 1:00 showing

-Duluth 10 theater; 300 Harbor Drive –Duluth MN

–4:00 after party at Carmody’s Irish Pub; 308 E. Superior St. -Duluth MN

June 27, 2011

Please join Frost River as they begin a new, expanding era of business.

When you make rugged, reliable canoe packs in Duluth and need to expand to a new bigger building what’s the most appropriate way to haul the last load? Well, a portage of course! The Frost River Trading Co. has arrived in Duluth’s Lincoln Park. We will be hauling the last load on our backs from our old shop to our new home.

It’s going to be a 400 rod portage from our industrial building on the shore of St. Louis Bay near South 27th avenue West to the new Frost River workshop and trading post at 1910 West Superior Street. We plan to leave at 10 am Wednesday June 29th and hope to arrive at our new retail and manufacturing space around 11 am.

Please feel free to rendezvous with the portage crew along the route of west Superior Street. We’ll be the people wearing big brown waxed canvas canoe packs, carrying a red canoe, accompanied by our Caribou mascot. You can also meet us at our new showroom, and get a tour of our new facility at the former Minnesota Surplus building.

Frost River has added four new employees in the last month and has recently been consigned to produce a new line of packs and bags jointly with the Woolrich Company. We ship our handmade items across the country and around the world to a growing list of wholesalers and online customers. We look forward to making it easier for customers who live in and visit Duluth to find us at our new retail space in Lincoln Park.

Let’s celebrate the beginning of a new era for a successful, expanding, local business in Duluth. Please join us along the portage path of West Superior Street and follow us to our new home.
