Leather is an important element to many Frost River packs and bags. Nearly all of our designs depend on leather at some point in construction. Leather backstraps are strong, leather handles are substantial and feel great, leather flapstraps keep everything together. Corners and bottoms that are reinforced with leather add durability and class.
We get our leather from Red Wing Minnesota. The S.B. Foot Tannery has supplied leather for Red Wing Shoes and Boots for over a century. The consistency and attention to detail in tanning cowhide helps them to make legendary footwear, it helps us to build reliability in our packs and bags.
The harness leather that we use on the load bearing straps is a custom item from the tannery. They developed it just for us and it is working great. As we’ve grown and become busier we use more leather than ever. We’ve moved from getting a hide now and then, to having it delivered by freight on a pallet.
We use a bunch of leather every day at our shop in Duluth. It’s great that we can do business with fellow Minnesotans. They make high quality materials, have a dependable supply, and being located in America, do a better job environmentally than many foreign tanneries.
Bringing in premium raw materials is one way we are able to make the most “reliable softgoods” on the planet. It is helping us earn a solid reputation in the marketplace, it is also important to us to support fellow American small businesses. Our local economy benefits, we are able to support a neighbor, and shopping local reduces transportation costs and energy. The fact that the crew in Red Wing produces great leather makes it a simple decision.
Thank you for your support.
