Canoes are near and dear to our hearts at Frost River. They’ve done so much to shape the travel, culture, and society up here in the northern canoe country, especially up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They have a long history, and have undergone changes in design and materials over thousands of years, yet remain mostly unchanged in purpose. A new book from the University of Minnesota Press follows the wake of the canoe through history and acts as a scrapbook of canoe culture in our neck of the woods.
Holiday shopping “Duluth Style”. The Duluth Winter Village will feature all local shops, all outside, at the historic Glensheen Estate on the shore of Lake Superior. It’s gonna be great! There’ll be mini cabins for the vendors, food and drinks for everyone, and enough Christmas Cheer to carry us all through the holidays and beyond.
We’ll be there with a veritable sleigh load of waxed canvas packs, bags, and goods for the full weekend’s event. It’ll be a magical experience as the Glensheen grounds are transformed into a holiday market for the whole family.
Parking is limited, plan to take a shuttle from UMD or the Congdon School. Bring your list and help support local Duluth businesses. Shop Small, Shop Local, and get the good stuff for your favorite people.
Join us on December 3 & 4 at Glensheen 10 am to 5 pm

We’d like to encourage you to consider local businesses and “Shop Small” on Small Business Saturday November 26th 2016. We’d appreciate your support and so would other locally owned small businesses in your neck of the woods. Besides, aren’t local gifts the best anyway?
This year at Frost River Trading Co. in Duluth, we’ll be hosting an open house with all our waxed canvas packs and bags on display along with tours of the shop where they’re made upstairs. There’ll be delicious hand crafted ice cream from Love Creamery. Paul, our favorite go-to blacksmith will be outside, at the front of the store with the Forging Community doing blacksmithing demonstrations. We’re also working on a special neighborhood beer for the occasion with our neighbors at Bent Paddle Brewing Co.
Stop by if you’re in the neighborhood, if not, please consider the little guys and #ShopSmall.
Small Business Saturday

A traditional European open air Christmas Market, right here in Minnesota. Originally, the Christkindlsmarkt Festival originated over 400 years ago in Germany. This year marks the seventh year for the Excelsior Christmas Group, a non-profit community organization to sponsor the Thanksgiving weekend event in Minnesota that’s filled with holiday music, food, fun, and shopping for the whole family. There’s even a parade on Friday.
Located outdoors behind the Excelsior Brewing Company in the west metro of the Twin Cities of Minnesota. The Excelsior Christkindlsmarkt a great event to get the Christmas season underway in traditional German style.
The Outdoor Adventure Expos are great at Midwest Mountaineering. This winter’s expo brings the familiar offering of great speakers, seminars, vendors, outfitters, and adventure and paddle sport revilers together at the Minneapolis store and big top tent venue.
There are great shopping opportunities (everything’s on sale), all sorts of information and expertise, food, beer (from our neighbors at Bent Paddle Brewing Co.), plus 50 cent popcorn all weekend long – all the good stuff in life at Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Expo.
The Christmas City of the North Parade is set to kick off the Christmas season here in Duluth on November 18th, 2016.
“Christmas City, wonderful city, all dressed up in snow and mistletoe…” Did you know that Duluth has it’s own Christmas Carol? Sung by Merv Griffin in the 1960’s it is the official song of the Christmas City of the North Parade, and does its part to ring in the Christmas season in these parts.
The Frost River crew will be in the parade that begins at 6:20 from Leif Erickson park, marches west on Superior Street, through downtown to the Depot at 5th Ave. West. The parade will be televised on KBJR-TV and likely rebroadcast throughout the season. You can stream the event here.
The forecast has cold, wind, and rain changing to snow. Sounds just about right for a Duluth parade in late November. The Frost River float will be full of smiling, hopefully not too frozen faces, with candy, stickers, waxed canvas canoe packs, and more. Give us a wave as we go by. Happy Christmas to all!
Duluth’s Lincoln Park is #CraftingSomethingGreat and we’d love to share it with you. The Frost River store, along with several of our neighboring businesses, have special events going all day. We’ll host the Love Creamery ice cream cart in the store for samples and sales, as well as the Forging Community portable blacksmith forge out front.
There’ll be a “Resource Round-Up” in the space next door for aspiring entrepreneurs to get the lowdown from experienced small business owners and learn about options from bankers to builders.
Free Transportation all around the neighborhood, C’mon over for art, music, food, and family fun! More details at the Our Lincoln Park page.

We’re heading south to Minneapolis for the third annual Duluth Pop-Down at Askov Finlayson. There’ll be plenty of Made in Minnesota gear, talk, and action as we check out the new “North” hats, that are made in Cloquet, Minnesota, and benefit a Campaign to “Keep the North Cold” and combat climate change.
We’ll be teaming up with other Duluth characters to bring some of the North down to the cities;
Bent Paddle Brewing Co. will be there, doing what they do so well… pouring great beer! Mayor Emily Larson will be there, too. It’s gonna be great.
Join us and Pop-Down from Duluth or up, over, or around and let’s get together at Askov Finlayson. It’s a great store that does good for the North, and the rest of the world too.
Music, food, crafts, local produce, fun… and Frost River will all be on hand at Chester Bowl in Duluth September 17. This community celebration of the fall season is in its 32nd year, it is a market, a festival, and a fundraiser all wrapped into one day of fun at beautiful Chester Bowl.
Please use the shuttle from UMD Lot B near the intersection of College Street and University Drive in Duluth as vehicle parking is a nightmare around the park.
Hosted at YMCA Camp St Croix by YMCA of Greater Twin Cities and the Royal Credit Union Foundation, Prairie Burn Music Festival is back and better than ever. We’ll be bringing our waxed canvas to the get-together. Amazing folk and bluegrass tunes, great food and beer, and camp games and activities the whole time.
