Notes on Totes
Need a sack to carry a bunch of stuff? Try a tote! We make a bunch of different sizes and shapes… eighteen at last count. With that much diversity, choosing the right one could be difficult. There are open top models, some zip or snap closed, adjustable handles, shoulder straps… Let’s break it down.
Would you like a closed top or open top? The Brighton Beach, both sizes of Zippy Totes, and the Temperance all zip closed. The Michigans, both sizes of Lake Superior, the Lake Huron, and both Crosby Garden Totes have open tops. The Bazaar, Gooseberry, and Lunch Tote all have snap closures.
Handbag, shoulder bag, or both? The Zippys have D-rings and come with a shoulder strap included. The Bazaar and Temperance have adjustable premium leather handles that can be run long enough to easily stick an arm through.
Premium model? Some are premiumized already like the Lake Superior Tote and Temperance (both have full leather bottoms). Others give you the choice, like the Lake Michigan. The standard version has a double canvas bottom, the premium has canvas with a leather bottom. It’s a similar story with the Zippys– two layers of canvas for the bottoms of the standards or a layer of canvas then leather for the premos.
Organized? Are you planning to run your tote like a briefcase? Both sizes of Lake Superior totes have our organizer panel just like what you would see in our briefcases (there are long pockets on the ends as well). The Temperance has a trio of dividers inside the zippered front pocket. The Bazaar Tote has an internal hanging pocket centered between the handles. Both sizes of Crosby Garden totes have handy pockets around the outside perimeter.
Of special consideration– Full canvas construction allows the Gooseberry Tote to fold flat. It works great to stow in another bag, brief, purse, or vehicle until you need a big bag to tote stuff (think grocery run). It will take the place of at least three disposable plastic grocery bags, likely more, and will hold up better. Hooray for sustainability! The Lake Huron Tote offers value. No leather other than the logo helps to keep the cost down. Double reinforced construction, tough cotton web handles, it’s like a stripped down pick-up truck meant to be used not just looked at. The Lunch Tote with it’s twin handles and single snap closure works great for a lunch, as a gift bag, or for a no-nonsense purse. In the woods it could be used for a berry bucket or a drop pouch– run the handles through a belt, you’ve got a big pocket to tote natural treasures back to camp.
All Frost River’s Totes are made from waxed cotton canvas (it’s water, stain, and coffee resistant) at our shop in Duluth Minnesota. We guarantee they are built to last and offer full repair services if they ever need rehab. Try a Frost River tote, you may wonder how you ever carried all your stuff without one.
