Grand Portage is known as “Kitchi Onigaming” (Great Carrying Place) to the Ojibwe. British fur traders said the nearly nine mile trail around Pigeon Falls between Lake Superior and the Canadian wilderness was “indispensably necessary” for travel and commerce the late 1700’s. Anyone portaging over the “Great carrying place” would no doubt trade ruthlessly for one of our Grand Portage Packs. Padded leather backstraps and a trusty tumpline take some of the pain out of a long portage. A wide 9” side gusset provides storage for a lot of gear. The expandable top flaps adjust to different sized loads; the pack is vertically compressible. Waxed canvas, great leather, and solid brass hardware add up to a pack that’ll last and hold a prized place in your canoe for years to come.
