Geologist Pack

The Geologist Pack was inspired by James Byron Hustad and has many features that make durable and ready for your next adventure. The classic knapsack design was kept in-mind while designing this bag.

Roaming the North Country in search of Iron Ore can lead an intrepid young geologist into all sorts of adventure. James Byron Hustad was known as J.B.H. had explored Minnesota’s Iron Range in search of underground deposits for U.S. Steel in the middle of the last century. Equipped with his trusty “rucksack” he would often travel by canoe or float plane into secluded roadless areas. Our Geologist Daypack is modeled after the pack that J.B.H. carried on many of his explorations in the U.S. and Canada, Brazil and Africa. He often basecamped for weeks during the summer, and was sometimes dropped off to explore uncharted claims. He lived a life of exploration, self reliance, and survival that any adventurer could envy. Our Geologist Pack is modeled after the classic knapsack design of a drawstring topped main compartment with a flap cover. We've added more volume over the knapsack, plus rugged bridle leather shoulder straps and brass Sam Brown Post quick released front pockets. As with everything we make, it's built by hand from waxed canvas, premium leather and solid brass hardware and is backed by our lifetime guarantee.

Absolutely the perfect pack for my needs. Impeccable craftsmanship, obviously durable enough to last a lifetime, sized just right for long weekends away in the city or a weekend at camp. Thrilled!

    Frost River Geologist Pack

Posted by Clark Strand on Apr 22nd 2021

This pack belongs to the category of "they don't make 'em like that anymore." This is a classic continental military style rucksack with top grade materials. It's a lot roomier than it looks, probably because of that "short and stout" design that another online reviewer mentioned. That and the two outside pockets, which are also bigger than you might expect. Think of this as a much lighter, more manageable Isle Royale Mini and you wouldn't be far off the mark. What I like most about it is this: pound for pound, this is a lot of pack. If the FR knapsack was too small for anything but a short day hike and the Isle Royale Jr. was too heavy for trips where I have to cover a lot of ground hiking, this pack is just right. It's the Goldilocks of overnight, toss-in-a-blanket-and-a-tarp, getaway bags. It would also make a good barebones go bag in a pinch for those with basic woodcraft skills.

    Commuter Daypack

I’ve only just begun to beat up on this pack, but so far it’s been excellent. I’m using it for motorcycle commuting in the Pacific Northwest and it’s been rained on and snowed on so far without being any worse for wear. Each day begins a little more character and patina, but it hasn’t failed me unlike its predecessors. I wish it had buckles on the outer pockets for better security, but that’s the only thing I’d change.

    Great bag

This is an incredibly well built backpack that is well worth the money. It holds a ton without getting too bulging. The only thing I would change would be the length of the straps, most of the time they are perfectly fine but if you have a lot of stuff in the bag you have to put the straps at the longest setting and it's still a little snug on your back.

I keep coming back to Frost River time and again for packs and bags. The Geologist Pack is my sixth and it doesn't disappoint! I'm well pleased with the workmanship and quality. I'm pretty sure it's going to outlast me.

    Geologist Pack

Just prefect for a day of deer hunting. Very well built, I do think the straps could be a tad longer for extra clothing needed at this time of year. Also would like to see a choice of waxed or leather padded straps.
