Great Northern Choppers

(20 reviews) Write a Review

The Great Northern Choppers are made of water resistant waxed canvas, durable leather, and solid brass hardware in Duluth, MN.

Serious mitts for serious weather. We make 'em warm, tall, and tough to give you a fighting chance against winter. Waxed canvas sheds slush and arctic polar fleece lining keeps you warm. The gauntlet length protects wrists and seals your sleeves. Burly buckskin leather palms and hearty waxed canvas will hold up to shovel handles and winter work, plus these choppers'll pop right off with a flick on a run to the tip-up. "Fish On!"

Frost River mittens and choppers are sized to be roomy -- just right for frigid Minnesota winters. Take a look at the sizing chart in the image gallery to see which size of our mitts will fit you best.

The Frost River Guarantee:

These mitts and choppers are tough. But if you wear ‘em like they’re work gloves, expect that they will eventually wear out. We guarantee all our reliable softgoods to hold together, that the hardware will do its job, but don’t mistake that for a claim they’ll last forever. We stand behind our work and take pride in making good stuff. However, if you use anything made from canvas and leather long enough and hard enough, you’ll need to eventually repair it, and sometimes replace it. When that time comes, we hope you choose to replace it with another Frost River item.

What’s the guarantee on mittens? We’ll cover that the seams will hold, the elastic will stay in place, and on the Great Northern Choppers the brass clasp will last and work as long as the mitts hold together. Other than that, repairs for holes, rope-tows chewing through, or dogs discovering the deliciousness of your mitts etc. would fall under the “repair at a reasonable rate” clause if they're still repairable.

Thank you in advance for your interest, understanding, and support.

Make sure to also buy the chopper liners too (just 12 bucks), for added warmth and layering.

    Excellent Choppers

These are excellent choppers. The waxes canvas definitely takes on water if you’re working in the snow with them, but this is to be expected with waxed canvas. There’s not a ton of insulation to them, but there’s the perfect amount of room for liners for this purpose (exactly how a chopper should be). The gauntlet cuffs are one of the best features of the mitt - just the right shape to be able to pull right in over a coat sleeve, while not leaving any room for wind/snow to get in.

    Good …. But

These are the quality that you would expect from Frost River. The only thing is that they are horribly under insulated. I live in northern Saskatchewan Canada and my hands froze after a while blowing snow. I have the chopper liners now and they’re fine but they should automatically come with the chopper liners since the mitts are $110 and the liners a mere $12 …. Just my thoughts

Such truly AMAZING WORKMANSHIP! I want to wear these all year long just to wave at people! If only FROST RIVER would make a size big enough to sleep in, just say’n!

    Great Northern Choppers

Using the sizing chart got me a pair with the perfect fit. Two thumbs up for that, because based on what I wear in gloves made for other applications, I'm sure I would have ordered a size too large. Always read the instructions! Fit and finish are excellent. Sadly, they arrived just days AFTER the great Texas freeze-out of 2021 ended. I never got the opportunity to test them in the snow and cold. It's probably 80 degrees outside at the moment so looks like the true test will have to wait. Just by look and feel, I'm confident they'll shine next winter.

Too early to say...but they seem great. I did buy a birch log bag last year and it works great..very sturdy and loads more than I can carry sometimes. And if it breaks or wears our it is biodegradable...not so for the previous faux leather sling I ha

Keep up the good work. The USD exchange and duties make the price go way up but your stuff is worth it and i cant find similar on our side of the line.

I wish the hay that gets inside the glove was easier to remove
